  16. Latest update to my Star Trek ascii collection. This reflects a massive 
  17. infusion of stuff from multiple sources on the net. (And this isn't it. I 
  18. have a couple Klingon ships, another UFP logo, a small Romulan ship, and 
  19. another communicator hiding somewhere in my disks... ) If you see 
  20. something I don't have, mail it to me. (I've been thinking of making this

  100. In scanning the ST Chronology, it is apparent that not all ships can be
  101. accounted for by known starship classes. The time period from 2196 to 2245
  102. features a number of exploratory missions, but no starship designs from
  103. that era are detailed by canonical sources. However, by looking at the
  104. evidence presented, it is possible to reconstruct the design of those
  105. ships, given a few basic assumptions. 
  106.  
  107. For the purposes of this reconstruction, I have assumed the following: 
  108.  
  109.    o The hypothetical design is known as Declaration Class.
  110.    o The ship design based on one of Matt Jeffries' preliminary
  111.     designs for the Enterprise, the same source as the
  112.     Daedalus Class design. ("The Making of Star Trek") 
  113.    o The following ships were of this class:
  114.     - USS Valiant (TOS "A Taste of Armageddon")
  115.     - SS Columbia (TOS "The Cage", "The Menagerie")
  116.     - USS Republic (TOS "Court Martial")
  117.     - SS Beagle (TOS "Bread and Circuses")
  118.  
  119. The Declaration Class was the Federation's primary vehicle of operations
  120. from 2196, when the Daedalus Class was withdrawn from service, until 2245,
  121. when the Constitution Class came into use. Noted ships of this Class were
  122. the USS Valiant, lost in 2217 and the SS Columbia, lost in 2236. Typical
  123. missions included exploration, research, and first contact. 
  124.  
  125. After the introduction of the Constitution Class, ships of this type were
  126. relegated to exploration and training duties. Known ships include the USS
  127. Republic NCC-1371, in service in the 2250s, and the SS Beagle, lost in
  128. 2261. 
  129.  
  130. The Declaration Class was equipped with Warp Drive, but a relatively
  131. primitive design known as the "Stardrive", giving the class its alternate
  132. name of a Class-IV Stardrive type. Matter/antimatter engines were not yet
  133. in use aboard starships at that time, severely limiting the capabilities
  134. of the ship. A fusion/fission reactor core provided the plasma needed to
  135. power the Warp Drives. ("Court Martial") Some time between 2236 and 2254
  136. ("The Cage"), matter/antimatter engines came into use. 
  137.  
  138. Long range subspace radio had not yet been invented during the initial
  139. years of the Declaration Class' service. While short range subspace radio
  140. was used to conduct the negotiations ending the Romulan Wars ("Balance of
  141. Terror") in 2161, conventional radio signals were still used to report
  142. back to the Federation in 2168 ("A Piece of the Action") aboard Daedalus
  143. Class ships, and as late as 2236 when the SS Columbia was lost. 
  144.  
  145. Physically, the ship resembled an inverted Constitution Class vessel, with
  146. a large saucer-shaped Primary Hull housing the main bridge, sick bay,
  147. engineering, and crew quarters. A sensor dome on the ventral surface acted
  148. as a source for shipboard lasers ("The Cage", "Obsession") and photon
  149. torpedos ("If Wishes Were Horses"). The bridge was positioned on the
  150. dorsal surface of the saucer. The computers were pre-duotronic in design.
  151. ("The Ultimate Computer")
  152.  
  153. The crew complement was approximately 75, plus or minus 25 depending on
  154. the mission. Engineering was located just forward of the Impulse Drives,
  155. which themselves were at the aft end of the Primary Hull. The
  156. fission/fusion reactor cores were located here, and conduits transfered
  157. plasma to the Warp Drives, and the Navigational Deflector on the Secondary
  158. Hull.

  160. Two underslung Warp Nacelles connected by small pylons to the Primary
  161. Hull. The Warp Nacelles were slightly more advanced than those of the
  162. Daedalus Class; individual coil segments were not visible, and the entire
  163. nacelle was encased in a protective outer layer. A Bussard hydrogen
  164. collector extended from the front of each nacelle, and just behind it were
  165. a number of vents for flushing unwanted materials. 
  166.  
  167. A short dorsal rose from the Primary Hull, angled back above the Warp
  168. Nacelles, and supported a small Secondary Hull. The upper surface would
  169. clamshell open, similar to the cargo bay of the old NASA Space Shuttles,
  170. to allow the 2 standard shuttlecraft entry and egress, as well as permit
  171. easy loading of cargo. On the forward surface, a golden dish acted as
  172. Navigational Deflector. Because of the dangerous nature of fission fuel,
  173. it was also kept in this part of the ship.

  1630. 1.) Four nacelles (redundant twin setup) connected to a hull that is
  1631. attached to a saucer.  The saucer is not "raised" as much as in the Big-E. 
  1632. The purpose is for power and redundancy - if one nacelle is damaged, you
  1633. can use the other "twin".  I would entertain a "rotating" saucer section
  1634. that would turn on the secondary hull's end in case diagonal Warp coils
  1635. got damaged. 
  1636.  
  1637. Warp crusing speed:  Warp 9.0 
  1638. Max. Warp:  9.97+ for 96 hours. (allowing for breakthoughs in TransWarp)
  1639.  
  1640. The battleship of the Federation has to get to those borders in a hurry,
  1641. and may have to chase the Borg around.  It should also be able to make/use
  1642. the Borg's TransWarp subspace conduits in "Descent". 
  1643.  
  1644. 2.) TWO antimatter/matter reactors - one for each twin nacelle, since I've
  1645. had people tell me I would need quadlithium cells to make the plasma
  1646. stream split four ways.  Make the antimatter containment safe and all
  1647. that.  Maybe substitute one of the AM/M reactors for a Romulan-style
  1648. Forced Quantum Singularity Drive (FQSD) of equal power.  The AM/M is ol'
  1649. reliable, but the FQSD would be there in case something disrupted the AM/M
  1650. reactions. 
  1651.  
  1652. A faster, more reliable way of ejecting the AM/M Warp core in case of
  1653. emergency.  Too many ST:TNG episodes have the Big-E blowing up because of
  1654. this design flaw. 
  1655.  
  1656. The backup fusion reactors would be located both in the primary and
  1657. secondary hulls (the Big-E-D had four? six?).  Triple redunant systems in
  1658. case they try to act up, too.  The altogether power compared to the
  1659. Enterprise-D would be 300%, because of the twin AM/M reactors and
  1660. additional fusion reactors. 
  1661.  
  1662. 3.) Changes to the saucer section: (keeping the 'swept' or as I call it
  1663. "Great Cobra Hood in the Sky" look according to Warp physics)
  1664.  
  1665. No saucer seperation unless you plan to self-destruct.  The added 'main
  1666. cannon' of "All Good Things.." cancels the seperation.  No Captain's
  1667. Yacht. More powerful impulse engines, possibly vaned for more
  1668. maneuverability. No stupid bar sticking on the nose of the saucer section
  1669. (Ten-Forward). 
  1670.  
  1671. A bridge located NOT at the top of the saucer section, but in the forward
  1672. middle of the saucer.  It would look a little better than the
  1673. Enterprise-D's battle bridge.  Put an auxiliary bridge in the second hull,
  1674. just in case. The computer core would be in the center of the saucer, with
  1675. medical in the rear center.  MUCH safer in a battle.

  1698. 4.) The secondary hull would be an actual structure, and not chopped in
  1699. half like the other Federation starships.  Here you would have the AM/M
  1700. reactors, additional fusion reactors, additional weapon systems, and
  1701. storage space.  The primary deflector dish would be similar to the
  1702. Enterprise-D's, but strengthened to allow for safe, frequent use of the
  1703. particle-beam weapon in "BoBW". 
  1704.  
  1705. 5.) THREE completely independent shield systems (see DREADNAUGHT! for
  1706. ideas) - if one shield system goes down, turn on #2 or #3.  Add metaphasic
  1707. shielding for close-stellar encounters.  Add cooling, more ways to store
  1708. the power, etc. Improve the superstructure metal used, so the starship can
  1709. better withstand solar photosphere temperatures and atmospheric
  1710. aerobraking without injuring the ship. 
  1711.  
  1712. 6.) Twice as many photon torpedoes, phaser banks, and other weapon
  1713. systems. Change the phasers so they have selectable phaser/disruptor
  1714. percentages-- that would permit the E to destroy ship hulls OR shields
  1715. (disruptors are better at taking down shields according to someone else). 
  1716. This ship is the battlewagon of the Federation, after all.  It should have
  1717. a better-than-average chance of defeating a Borg cube, laugh at a threat
  1718. of less than three Romulan ships, or four Cardassian vessels.  It should
  1719. also have non-energy weapons, like railguns, for small targets and so that
  1720. the enemy cannot read a buildup in power.  Add the "main cannon" seen in
  1721. "All Good Things...".  It was an EXCELLENT weapon to have! 
  1722.  
  1723. 7.) This is a military vessel, no dependents allowed.  The holodeck
  1724. provides recreational/physical training.  The dreadnaught would have an
  1725. absolute minimum skeleton crew of 260, with a normal compliment of 700,
  1726. with room for 300-500 more people.  A computer core, medical staff, and
  1727. science staff equal to a Galaxy-class.  This isn't a rescue vessel, or a
  1728. diplomatic host, this is a battleship. All that extra space would be
  1729. brigs, triple-redundant backup systems, room for additional equipment,
  1730. etc.  It's called a "hardship"  tour in the Army.  Typical rotation tour
  1731. would be one year, with the option to volunteer for additional years of
  1732. service at 110% pay. 
  1733.  
  1734. 8.) The phase-cloaking device - Let's get real here, folks.  Treaty or no
  1735. treaty, the phase-cloak is just too good to pass up for warfare purposes. 
  1736. And the Federation in "All Good Things..." DID have one! 
  1737.  
  1738. 9.) About the shuttlebays...have two "main" shuttlebays, with a variety of
  1739. shuttlecraft.  Also, perhaps in the secondary hull, have one main bay for
  1740. Maquis-class starship fighters (I thought they were great in ST:DS9 "The
  1741. Maquis" and ST:TNG "Preemptive Strike").  Have two to six fighter-craft. 
  1742.  
  1743. 10.) Add two "suicide" or "scorched-earth tactic" Genesis torpedos or
  1744. modidfied Nemesis torpedos in the main torp bay, just in case.  Have a
  1745. good R&D staff to work on field-testing new weapon systems for when the
  1746. Borg come back. 
  1747.  
  1748. Make six such craft and the they would be worthy of the name dreadnaught
  1749. (that's "dread nought" in the old English, folks, or "don't worry"). 
  1750.  
  1751. Put a Rear Admiral (O-7) in charge of each Dreadnaught, because of the
  1752. firepower . (Just like Riker in "All Good Things...")
